Ever wonder what you can do on campus during summer (besides Summer Session)? There are plenty of activities students can—and can’t—do for fun and free time on school grounds. From pets on campus to putting your feet in the water of Big Chico Creek, we have answered some campus policy questions you may not have thought to ask!

Can you go swimming in the creek?

Sure! Why not? Big Chico Creek meanders through campus, with small paths leading down to the water at various locations. You can absolutely take a quick dip or simply let your feet sit in the water after a long day walking from class to class. But just because you can doesn’t mean you want to. The creek can be cold or too shallow for much splashing, and you never know what wildlife you may encounter. . . . It’s definitely a no-go in the winter, when the water tends to flow higher and faster.

Can you go into the buildings on campus?

You can access buildings on campus during the summer months, as long as they are still in operation. Hours vary depending on the location, so ask your department or the office you wish to visit for clarification!

Can you hang out in the library?

Meriam Library may be one of the best places to sit and relax all day. The hours are designed to be most convenient for student utilization, and there is no time limit to how long you can stay during operational hours. Summer access has gotten a little tricky because we have some construction blocking the breezeway entrance, but never fear, alternative routes are here—you can enter through the staff entrance side door across from Student Services Center.

Can you eat at Marketplace?

You can eat at Marketplace, even during the summer! On-campus food stations where students can grab some grub over summertime are: Marketplace 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Urban Roots 10 a.m.–3 p.m., Common Grounds 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m, and Butte Station 7 a.m.–2 p.m. Regular hours return August 20. In the meantime, be sure to check out the omelette station near Common Grounds to curb your morning hunger!

Can you speak with advisors?

You can speak with academic advisors over summer, and it is encouraged! Healthy communication with an advisor prior to the school year allows students the necessary preparation and support for the rigorous year to come, without the pressure of hundreds of other students attempting to meet with advisors at the same time!

Can you bike or skate through campus?

You cannot bike or skate through the campus core at any point and time, even during summer. (Seriously.) The no skate or ride rule in is place for pedestrian safety and ensures that no collisions occur! We love you all so much, we want to keep you safe! For full details, here is a link to our campus Code of Regulations—see Section II.

Can you have pets on campus?

You can have pets on campus! No need to leave your fur-babies behind; Chico State is pet friendly—to an extent. All pets, big and small, must be with their owners at all times, on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and picked up after! Keep in mind, no animals are allowed within school buildings unless they are service animals and they cannot be left unattended outside.

Can you smoke on campus?

You can technically smoke tobacco on campus but only in designated smoking areas and only for a few more weeks. A California State University system Executive Order goes into effect September 1, 2017, banning all smoking (including vaping) on or near the University campus. If you would like help quitting, the Student Health Center and Campus Alcohol and Drug Education Center (CADEC) offer smoking cessation resources and support. You can do it! We believe in you! (Also note that due to federal regulations, smoking or possessing marijuana anywhere on campus—including residence halls—is strictly prohibited.)

Can you work out at the WREC over summer?

Yes, you can work out at the WREC over summer—if you are a currently enrolled student. New and transfer students unfortunately cannot access the WREC for free the summer before their first semester. However, they can pay a prorated rate for the amount of time they want to work out before school starts. (Which is by far less expensive than paying $10 per visit as someone’s plus one. Insider tricks, people!) Summer hours found here!

Whatever you may be doing during the remainder of summer, we hope it is safe, fun, and in accordance with the campus code! Be sure to relax, maybe take a dip in the creek, and take care of yourself in preparation for the school year to come. Happy summer, Wildcats!
