’Cats Claw Their Way to the Elite Eightmen'sbasketball2

With a only few minutes left on the clock, the ’Cats were behind by 13 points in the basketball Division II West Region Championship game against Cal State Stanislaus.

Rashad Parker landed two 3-pointers and Amir Carraway shot game-winning free throws to help rack up the 20 points scored by the Wildcats in the last two minutes of the game. It paid off with an 81-80 win over Stanislaus.

“We were down by a lot with very little time left, so I just didn’t want to give up and kept fighting until the very end, and thankfully we ended up making the comeback and coming out victorious,” Parker said.

The men will go onto the Elite Eight, for the first time in the program’s history, in Evansville, Indiana, on March 26.

“It is something you work very hard toward all year, and to actually be in this position is just amazing,” Parker said.

Wildcat fans welcomed back the men after their victory in front of Acker Gym.

“We didn’t expect much of a reception when we returned, and to see all the people that showed up to show their support was unreal,” Parker said. “It felt really good to see how many people cared about us and that were really pulling for us to win and were just as happy about our success as we are.”men'sbasketball copy

Trans*forming Education and Communities

The Associated Students Gender and Sexuality Equity Center is putting on the first annual Trans* Conference: TRANS*forming Communities. The free conference will consist of workshops and speakers and will be followed by Trans* Week, which is hosted by the Stonewall Alliance Center of Chico.

Trans ConferenceTrans* is an umbrella term that includes transgender, genderqueer, intersex, and many other gender identities. Everyone is welcome to the event, and the variety of topics covered will include basic trans* history and language, nonbinary/genderqueer identities, trans* women of color, political asylum, trans* organizing, activist writing, and trans* people of Christian faith.

Sarena Kirk, a senior multicultural gender studies and sociology double major, is the LGBTQ+ program coordinator at the GSEC.

Kirk said that some people are intimidated and believe that they don’t have a stake in trans* issues.

“I think a lot of people don’t see how they are connected to the trans* community when in fact they are,” Kirk said. “I hope that this conference will be a starting point for people.”

The hope of this conference is to educate and create a trans* community.

“It’s a unique opportunity to go to a free conference and expand your mind, expand your education in a way that you’re not going to get in a classroom,” Kirk said.

The conference will be held on March 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. (There’s a free lunch too!) Click here to register.

Bringing Cathletes To Your Computer Screen

Video shorts featuring athletic standouts on campus have generated some buzz during the past year, and it all started on a trash can.

Britt Wright, ’13, communication studies major and former outfielder on the women’s softball team, first hatched the idea for ’Cats on Camera last year and started filming these human-interest pieces and game recaps with soccer player Scotie Walker.

cats on camera“She was using her phone and balancing it on a trash can, so it was very low budget,” said Abby Glasgow, a senior media arts major and former member of the women’s soccer team. She joined the ’Cats on Camera team and later took the lead after Wright graduated.

Now Glasgow and her partner behind the camera, senior communications major Lauren Silvers, publish a video at least once a week, whether it is a game recap, a human-interest piece, or highlights. Last week, Glasgow traveled with the women to the NCAA tournament.

“I do ’Cats on Camera because I really do love to interview the athletes and create something that people enjoy watching,” Glasgow said.

Now that Glasgow is graduating, the search is on for a new host of ’Cats on Camera.

“It’s important to me because it’s kind of like my baby,” Glasgow said.

Glasgow hopes that after two seasons, ’Cats on Camera will continue.

“It gives fans and students the opportunity to get to know Chico State athletes on a more personal level and allow them to see events that they might’ve missed or didn’t know about,” Glasgow said.

Anyone interested in becoming a part of ’Cats on Camera should contact Luke Reid, the sports information director, in the athletics department.
