The Gus Manolis Bridge reopened today with a ceremonial stroll across Big Chico Creek led by Chico State President Paul Zingg and members of the Manolis family, including Gus’ great-grandson Gus.

The original bridge was named for great Chico State football coach Gus Manolis, called the “coach of the century” because of his winning record. Manolis lost his life, at age 34, while searching for a Boy Scout lost in the mountains near Mendocino.

The previous bridge was knocked out a year ago by a fallen tree.
