In honor of Founders Week, an outstanding student and alum from each college are rewarded for their success, excellence and leadership. The blog will feature a different college each day during Founders Week, April 4-13, 2014.
Service, be it as a political adviser or a youth mentor, distinguishes the two College of Behavioral and Social Sciences honorees featured today.
Distinguished Alumnus: Dr. Edward J. Rollins
You know you’ve made it when you have a Wikipedia page. Dr. Edward Rollins has made the New York Times Best Seller list, been a contributing political analyst for Fox News, and—oh yeah—served four U.S. presidents.
Rollins managed President Ronald Reagan’s re-election campaign, winning 49 of 50 states, and was the first non-member of Congress to serve as the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. He served four years as the chief political adviser to the chairman of the Republican National Committee was the chief of staff and assistant to the speaker of the California Assembly.
Some of his other accomplishments include
-receiving a 2010 the Ellis Island Medal of Honor
-induction into the American Association of Political Consultants Hall of Fame in 2011
-being awarded an honorary degree from the California State University Board of Trustees in 2012
-seeing his memoir, Bare Knuckles and Back Rooms, become a best seller in 1996
Student: Fidel Illustre
You know you’re an outstanding student when you’re asked to take the lead in two classes of two courses.
Fidel Illustre has been a mentor with Leaders for a Lifetime for Hmong youth, volunteered by building houses in Louisiana and Chicago, and served as a peer advisor for Chico State’s Summer Orientation.
Illustre has taught environmental health at Chapman Elementary, planned fifth-grade PE courses, and created a nutrition decathlon for Little Chico Creek and Rosedale schools.
After graduating this spring, Illustre plans to work toward a master’s in health administration.
