Kristen Schrock’s connection to Chico State began long before she was a student at the University.

Having grown up in Chico with two Wildcats for parents— Marcia Samuels (Music, ’71) and Steven Harter (Finance, ’74)—she initially resisted the idea of attending her hometown university. She had fond memories of campus as a kid during Pioneer Days (her dad’s band even performed on a flatbed truck during the annual parade) but wanted to experience something new for herself.

But life’s most unexpected turns sometimes bring you back to where you started—if only to help you see the world with fresh eyes.

For several reasons, Shrock (Marketing, ’94; MA, ’11) ended up enrolling at Chico State and immediately rediscovered the wonder she felt years ago.  “I saw Chico through a new lens, met people I would never have encountered, and discovered parts of the city I hadn’t known before,” Shrock said.

Her path wasn’t without challenges. Graduating in 1991, she walked with three units outstanding, which she later completed in 1994, just before the birth of her first child. After a brief stint in the mortgage industry, Schrock found her true calling in education. As California reduced its student-teacher ratios, she seized the opportunity to earn her teaching credential and launched a career with the Chico Unified School District that has spanned nearly three decades.

In 2011, Schrock returned to Chico State for her master’s degree, balancing her studies with the demands of being a single mother and a full-time teacher. Her perseverance during this period exemplifies the determination that would characterize her career. Schrock’s dedication to education led her from teaching to administration, ultimately becoming the principal of Little Chico Creek Elementary School, a role she has held for 11 years.

Schrock’s connection to Chico State has now come full circle. As a member and now president of the Chico State Alumni Association Board, she is passionate about giving back to the university that helped shape her.

“I owe a lot to Chico State,” she says. “Being on the board has allowed me to appreciate the importance of alumni contributions in keeping a thriving university going.”

From her early days as a child to being a college student, and now to her current role as a community leader, Schrock’s story is a testament to the enduring influence of Chico State on its alumni. Reflecting on those years, she acknowledges Chico State’s transformative impact on her life. “My years at Chico State were the best. The universe definitely conspired in my favor.”

The Wildcat legacy continues to run in Schrock’s family. Her husband Tyler (Attended, ’01) owns the downtown bike shop North Rim Adventure Sports, and her youngest son Brennan Wiegert graduated in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

What is your favorite Chico State memory?

Arena Registration! Back in the day, there was no such thing as online registration. We had to assemble in Shurmer and Acker Gyms and wait in line to add and drop classes. It was such a social event! Many vendors gathered as we exited the gym, handing out freebies, treats, and all sorts of things. I loved the energy of that day!

How did Chico State prepare you for your work as an educator and education administrator?

Having professors and instructors who had previously been in the teaching profession helped me immensely as they had practical, hands-on experience. It shaped my vision of an elementary school principal. I am so grateful for the variety and experience these instructors brought to the classroom.

What is your favorite part about being a CSAA board member (or your favorite board memory)?

I love meeting and working with other alumni who have been positively impacted by their time at Chico State. I am so impressed with the diversity, experience, and intelligence of our board.

What is your advice for today’s students or alumni just starting their careers?

Nothing earth-shattering here—get involved! Step outside your comfort zone and join clubs and groups, meet new people, and experience new activities. Some won’t be a match, but some just might!

How do you Do and Dare?

I “Do and Dare” by taking the above advice—get involved.  Additionally, I strive to lead by example, be curious, and build and maintain meaningful relationships.
