Awards, Honors, and Activities
Chico State recently won the 2023-24 Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner’s Cup with 89.15 points, less than 2 points ahead of Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Marcos. This year saw Wildcats posting impressive performances across the board. The men’s and women’s cross country teams both won California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Meanwhile, our basketball teams finished in the top four, with the men in fourth and women in second. Other noteworthy results include the men’s and women’s track and field teams, each placing second. The Wildcats soccer teams also earned top-four finishes, adding critical points to this very close competition. This is the seventh time the University has won the cup in the last 12 years.
Chico State’s Science Building recently earned a prestigious Education Facility Design Award from the American Institute of Architects. The cutting-edge building, which was designed by the SmithGroup, is not only the newest building on campus but also one of the ambitious buildings within the 23-campus California State University system. In both design and function, it sought to put the sciences on display while integrating them into the core of the physical campus.

Retired Chico State business professor Curt DeBerg, now living in Miami and Hendaye, France, recently published, “Wrestling with Demons: In Search of the Real Ernest Hemingway.” The biography outlines five “demons” that shaped Hemingway and his work: “his parents’ disapproval, remorse, chronic pain, anguish, and a deep-seated sense of rivalry with other writers and war combatants.”
