Take the Challenge!

There are thousands of little things we can all do in our daily lives to be more green. It only takes a little sustainable thinking.

The Institute for Sustainable Development and Associated Students Sustainability are promoting the Project Green Challenge on campus. The project aims to get as many participants as possible to make a new, single change each day for the entire month of October. The goal: “30 days. 30 themes. Simple steps to sustain a healthy, just, and thriving planet.”

The first few days last week focused on researching the ingredients in your personal hygiene products and learning about possible toxins and pesticides used on your favorite foods.

Sign up, earn points, and compete for a grand prize worth more than $12,000, which includes $1,000 to Whole Foods and a Suja juice party for 100 friends, just to name a couple items. The leader board is divided into top students and top schools.

Cat Tracks

Welcome to Walktober! The WREC is hosting Cat Tracks, a monthlong event promoting healthy living. Students and staff sign up, get a free pedometer to wear on their hip, and record their steps for the entire month.

Participants log their steps for a chance to win prizes each week, and those who log every week for the month of October will receive a Cat Tracks T-shirt.

The WREC has distributed all of its pedometers to 500 participants, said LaReesa Solis-Myers, Rec Sports program coordinator.

“Our goal for Cat Tracks is to promote walking as a form of fitness and walk 15 million steps in October,” Solis-Myers said.
