Fond Farewell: Retired Animal Science Professor Philip Rose

The sky above Trinity Hall is illuminated by the Northern Lights, creating a dramatic pinkish hue.

Professor Philip Rose, who taught animal science at Chico State for 17 years, passed away on June 1, 2024. He was 87.

Born June 30, 1936, in Freeport, Illinois, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1959 and his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1961.

Rose went on to serve as a veterinarian in the United States Army, working with the K-9 Corps and food supply unit, before transitioning to life as a veterinarian with a focus on food animal medicine. He particularly enjoyed working with producers and their livestock, relishing the open spaces and natural settings that represented his adjacent passions: fishing, woodwork, horse riding, and travel.

In 1977, Rose was hired by Chico State and brought a great deal of experience and passion for animal science to the University. Known for his calm, caring demeanor, Rose was highly regarded by students and named Outstanding Professor in Agriculture.

“Doctor Rose came to Chico State at a time when there was an increase in pre-vet students and he advised many of them in preparation for vet school or related fields of study,” said Wesley Patton (Agriculture, ’65), who taught alongside Rose in the College of Agriculture. “He taught many of the science-based classes that were required in the pre-vet program. He offered guidance to the livestock units at the University Farm since he came with industry experience.”

His life in Chico brought many rich memories and milestones, including marrying Bertie Rowland on December 30, 1985.

With a full heart, Rose retired in 1994 and returned to the Midwest where he provided relief veterinary support for clinics that served clients in production agriculture. A health setback forced him to leave large animal medicine, and he returned to higher education to complete a master of divinity in 2007. This allowed him to serve small churches in northeast Missouri as a teaching elder, alongside his wife.

Rose is survived by his wife, Reverend Bertie Rose; his children Diana Rose Lettieri (Vince), Andrew Rose, and Stephanie Stanton (Heath); brother Terry Rose (Holly); grandchildren Marissa Rose, Geoffrey Rose (Julia), and Eli Stanton; and nephew Brent Rose.

The University Flag will be lowered in his memory on August 6, 2024.
