Publications, Presentations and Exhibits

Sarah Pape, Department of English, penned an opinion piece in The New York Times titled, “When Paradise is on Fire.”

Matthew Stone, Department of Recreation, Hospitality, and Parks Management, presented “Demographic differences in European beer tourism behaviours” at Tomorrow’s Food Travel Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden. The paper was co-authored by two Italian food tourism researchers.

Stephen David Caldes, Department of Journalism and Public Relations, penned a guest opinion titled “A heartbreaking moment of utter resilience” in the Nov. 29 issue of the Chico News & Review.

Olav Bryant Smith, Department of Philosophy, contributed an essay, titled, “Contributing to God’s Growing Perfection,” to Thomas Jay Oord’s book, Uncontrolling Love: Essays Exploring The Love Of God.

Levi Johnson, student in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, presented a poster during Obesity Week, a collaborative conference of the Obesity Society and the American Society of Bariatric Surgery.

Awards and Activities

Money magazine ranked Chico State No. 45 on its list of Best Colleges for Business Majors.

Computer science major Victor Torres placed first in the National Cyber League (NCL) competition from Nov. 2-4. Chico State also had nine additional student place within the top 100 in a competition with 4,728 total competitors. The NCL competition is “a defensive and offensive puzzle-based, capture-the-flag style cybersecurity competition.”

The Chico State team of students Zachary Minneker, Alexander Corley, Victor Torres, Jasper Stubbe, and Conor Moening placed first nationwide out of 367 teams in the National Cyber League group competition this month.

Kelli McCrea, Department of Recreation, Hospitality, and Parks Management, was selected by the PCMA Foundation as a Convening Leaders Faculty Scholarship recipient.  She will receive complimentary registration, housing, and airfare to the 2019 PCMA Convening Leaders summit. PCMA is a leading international association in the meeting and events industry.

Stone was elected President of the Western Federation of ICHRIE (International Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Educators), the largest association of faculty in hospitality management. He also serves on the International Board of Directors for ICHRIE.

Stone co-authored “Leadership skills in event management courses” which was presented at IMEX America (International Meetings Exchange) Faculty Engagement Summit.
