Hugh Hammond’s Heartfelt Gestures

HughGivingKissSometimes it’s because a peer looks like they’re having a bad day, sometimes it’s to bring a smile to the face of a stressed-out teacher, and sometimes it’s just because. Hugh Hammond, a senior music composition and recording arts double major, has been giving away chocolate kisses since last summer.

It started when his employers would give him some chocolate kisses every day, and then he’d give them to some of his friends. He saw how happy it made them, so he continued to hand them out.

“They’re small enough that nobody would feel guilty,” he said.

He’s left them on shelves as surprises for a stranger to find and has found himself meeting new, interesting people.

“I don’t just walk up to girls and give them kisses,” Hammond said.

Hammond says he likes the innuendo of the name. It’s a small, intimate, and yet innocent gesture that can make a large difference in someone’s day.

“Most days we’re all stressed, and a little love goes a long way,” he said. “Or a little chocolate goes a long way.

Sheep and Goat Sale Day Successful

More than 900 people flocked to the University Farm on Saturday for the annual Sheep & Goat Educational Day and Sale. More than 40 Chico State and Butte and Modesto junior college students participated in the 43-year-old event by giving workshops and teaching children about the care of animals.sheepandgoatDay2

Chico State had the champion goat and the People’s Choice goat.

This is the third year that senior animal science major Michael Ackley-Grady has been a part of it. Rather than running a workshop as usual, he overlooked the entire event.

“I believe this was the best one yet,” Ackley- Grady said. “We had an outstanding amount of people in attendance and I think the entire day went smooth.”

Coming up next at the University Farm is Future Farmers of America Field Day on March 1, which is led by Chico State and Butte College students to teach high school students about animals and crops. More information about registration can be found here.
