“Soulful Gingers Unite!”

What started out as a joke between friends turned into a fun community for redheads.redheadsSociety

J.D. Stone, a senior computer information systems major, is the president and founder of the Chico State Redheads Society and already has roughly 20 members signed up for the club in its infancy.

Stone wondered if there was a club on campus but could only find one that Princeton had about a decade ago. So he decided to start something new, basing the Chico State chapter on Princeton’s version.

“It’s supposed to be fun; it’s supposed to be enjoyable,” Stone said. “We encourage non-redheads to join.”

This semester, the club will have a movie night featuring actors with red hair, a moon party/BBQ to prevent sunburns, trivia night, and a redhead festival.

For more information, check out the club’s Facebook page.

Let the Madness Begin

The NCAA Championship Tournament Selection Show brought some excitement to Mom’s Restaurant on Sunday night when the men and women basketball teams were officially placed in the Division II NCAA tournament.

The teams gathered there for dinner to watch the NCAA Championship Tournament Selection Show, which served up some great news.

“I was very excited to hear that we were going to be playing in the [tournament],” said junior center and forward Nate Appel. “A lot of teams do not have the opportunity to be competing in this tournament.”

The men are the No. 4 seed in the West Regional and will play Cal Baptist, the No. 5 seed, on Friday at 5 p.m. at Cal State San Bernardino.

“I look forward to the memories that are going to be made during this trip,” Appel said. “This is something I am never going to forget.”

The women are the No. 5 seed in the eight-team West Regional field.

“Since we’ve lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament the past two years, our expectations are to take it one game at a time but get further along into the tourney then we have historically and win the west region,” said junior guard Annie Ward.

The women, who were originally knocked out by Cal State Dominguez Hills, will play that very team on Friday at 5 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona.

“We were really excited to get redemption against Dominguez Hills,” Ward said.

Tune in to the live broadcast on Friday with a play-by-play with Mike Wessels.
