Mark Hendry Reflects on Leadership and Legacy with the Chico State Alumni Association
As Mark Hendry (Industrial Arts, ’85; Information and Communication Studies, ’85) prepares to step down from his role as past president of the Chico State Alumni Association Board of Directors this January, he reflects on his journey—from growing up in Southern California to becoming a successful business leader in Northern California, all with a strong connection to Chico State.
Hendry’s roots trace back to Orange County, where his family’s printing company business, Creative Composition, began as a small operation run out of their home. Seeking a quieter, more rural life and an escape from the smog, his family moved to Orland in 1974. After high school, Hendry served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany, before returning to California in 1980 to attend Chico State.
“Chico State was where everything came together for me—not just in terms of academics but in the relationships and opportunities that shaped my career,” said Hendry. “I walked in as a GI Bill student fresh out of the Army, and by the time I graduated, I had two majors that aligned with what I was passionate about.”
After a brief stint working as the chief designer for an exhibit design company in Sacramento, Hendry returned to Chico to join Creative Composition full time. Over the last 40 years, he has worked alongside his three brothers to grow the business into one of the largest printing companies in Northern California. Now as CEO, he is actively involved in the company’s operations.
Hendry fondly remembers the relationships he built at Chico State, particularly in the graphic design department. Many of these connections have endured over the years, evolving into business partnerships and friendships.
“Today, I get to work with many of my fellow alumni, building professional relationships that trace back to my time on campus,” he said. “Chico State wasn’t just an education; it was a community that set the foundation for my life and career.”
Hendry’s involvement with Chico State came full circle when he joined the Alumni Association Board in 2020. Though he humbly downplays his personal impact, Hendry has been part of initiatives that have strengthened alumni engagement, particularly through events like Wildcat Weekend and the annual Distinguished Alumni Recognition Ceremony.
As he reflects on his time on the board, Hendry is optimistic about its future under new leadership. He emphasizes the importance of engaging younger alumni and ensuring that Chico State remains top of mind for future generations. For Hendry, giving back to the University is a legacy worth continuing.
How did your degree from Chico State contribute to your success?
Chico State provided me with a well-rounded education with a focus on practical skills. Whether it was through coursework, projects, or hands-on learning, the knowledge I gained helped me develop critical thinking and leadership abilities.
I was also introduced to so many mentors, peers, and professionals who have helped guide my journey, offered advice, and become part of my network.
What do you enjoy about running a printing company and working in that field?
One of the things I enjoy the most is solving problems for clients and helping them grow their business through our marketing efforts.
Being in a leadership position also allows me to inspire and guide our team. Watching them grow, succeed, and bring innovative ideas to the table is incredibly rewarding. Overseeing a company also forces you to constantly grow—professionally and personally. The constant evolution of business is energizing.
What do you consider one of your biggest professional successes?
When Creative Composition was based in Orland, we were operating out of three different buildings. In 2010, we moved the company to Chico, which allowed us to have our whole operation under one roof. This helped increase our productivity and camaraderie with our team. Also, being part of the Chico community opened up other business opportunities with clients in the area.
What is your advice for today’s students or alumni just starting their careers?
I think one of the most important aspects of the University experience is meeting new people and developing relationships with instructors, especially in your area of study. The relationships I developed during my time at Chico State were invaluable.
How do you Do and Dare?
In my free time, I enjoy mountain climbing and back-country skiing. Both sports require you to be present in the moment and to be aware of the dangers that exist in nature, such as avalanches and extreme weather conditions.
