California State University, Chico continues to provide a helpful and welcoming environment for its military student veterans. And the recognitions keep rolling in.

In a listing of 2019-20 Military-Friendly Schools by the organization Military Friendly, CSU, Chico was listed in the large public schools category as a “designated location,” meaning the University is “deemed Military Friendly based on survey results.”

CSU, Chico is one of only 46 California colleges and universities on the list and joins six other CSU institutions. The ranking is based on federal programs that currently are in operation and good standing, institution accreditation, and feedback from student veterans, among other criteria. According to Military Friendly, operated by VIQTORY, a veteran-owned business, CSU, Chico provides a “comprehensive success-oriented program for student veterans by creating an atmosphere that far exceeds the basic need for educational benefits.”

“It shows we have a welcoming environment,” said Larry Langwell, coordinator at the University’s Office of Veterans Affairs. “I’m really appreciative to know that these people that served their country are being served well when they come back.”

While providing services to student veterans is now common practice on many university campuses across the country—especially within the CSU system—it wasn’t always that way. CSU, Chico has been a leader for its many policies and procedures in working with student veterans, from ease of re-enrollment after returning from deployment and its dedicated on-campus centers and programs to priority registration through the Veteran Educational Support Team (VEST).

The Student Veteran Organization was created in 1967 by student veterans returning to the University following the Vietnam War. And the Office of Veterans Affairs, located in the Student Services Center Room 330, was created in 2010, one of the first of its kind in the nation to exclusively serve student veterans to enjoy their unique culture in a safe environment.

CSU, Chico also observes its annual Honoring Our Veterans around the Veterans Day holiday, recognizing the service of veterans throughout the Chico community.

This honor is the most recent of many national recognitions bestowed upon the University for its military-friendly atmosphere. Other honors include:
