Publications, Presentations, and Exhibits

Michael Magliari (Department of History) published an essay titled, “The California Indian Scalp Bounty Myth: Evidence of Genocide or Just Faulty Scholarship?” in the University of California Press’s California History. In this exercise in historical detective work and popular myth-busting, Magliari explores the widely held belief that the state of California paid cash bounties for Native American heads and scalps as part of an official policy of genocide during the Gold Rush and Civil War years.

Awards, Honors, and Activities

College Consensus listed Chico State on half a dozen of its rankings: 2023 Best Online Public Colleges and Universities (No. 7); 2023 Best Online Colleges and Universities in the US (No. 9); 2023 Best Colleges and Universities in the West (No. 21); 2023 Best Value Online Colleges and Universities (No. 22); 2023 Best Value Colleges and Universities (No. 23); 2023 Most Affordable Online Colleges and Universities (No. 28); 2023 Best Public Colleges and Universities (No. 30); and 2023 Best Colleges and Universities (No. 96).

Golfer Tyler Ashman’s junior season saw him card seven top-10 finishes, average even par through the year, and share first place at the Southwest Airlines HPU Sharks Shootout. The Golf Coaches Association of America rewarded him with a PING All-America honorable mention, the 25th Wildcat golfer to receive such an honor.
