Worth Sharing: Chico State Named 2021 Ballot Bowl Champs

Awards and Activities

Chico State was named the overall champion for the 2021 Ballot Bowl: Registration Rumble, a project from the California Secretary of State’s Students Vote Project. With the largest number of students registered by higher education institutions throughout the entire state, Chico State registered 166 students leading up to the 2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election—Cal State Long Beach was second in the CSU with 99 students registered.

Chico State softball standouts Amanda Metzger and Brooke Larsen made the most of their time away from the diamond during the pandemic—both were named 2021 All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Publications, Presentations, and Exhibits

CONECTA: Tecnologico de Monterrey magazine published findings from professor Keiko Goto (Department of Nutrition and Food Science) had her COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) project in “Investigate obesity! Tec and California students join forces in challenge.” Goto and her NFSC 667 students in (“Issues in International Nutrition”) are participating in a COIL project with students at TEC (Technologic de Monterrey), Mexico for a joint nutrition research project.

Graduate student Justin Hebert (Department of Kinesiology) and associate professor Aubrey Newland (Department of Kinesiology) published research findings in “How to Improve Performance Through Quality Coaching” on the website Shape America. The pair explore how coaches’ actions and behaviors can impact their relationships with their athletes—as well as the athletes’ performances.

Matthew Stone (Department of Recreation, Hospitality, and Parks Management) recently lectured in tourism and hotel management and wellness and spa management courses at Kaunas University of Applied Sciences (Kauno Kolegija) in Kaunas, Lithuania. The city of Kaunas will be the 2022 European Capital of Culture.
