Worth Sharing: Speech and Debate Team Shines

Awards and Activities

Chico State Speech and Debate Team member and international relations student Kelsey McCaffery received a quarterfinalist award at last month’s Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and Convention. Meanwhile, the team itself was recognized for finishing in the top 30 percent of the 71 schools that competed. Other team members included political science student Eduardo Montiel; communication design student Eduardo Aldrete; communications studies students Catherine Fritz, Christian Wilson, Edgar Hernandez, Kayla Ernst, and Brina Covarrubias; psychology student Jericka Roshell-Carson; and organizational communication student Michael Menches.

Anthropology student Christina Quigley earned a Fulbright Award to study in Tanzania, working on Pentecostalism and rhumba music among Congolese refugees.

Lee Altier (College of Agriculture) was selected as the 2019 recipient of the Paul Person’s Sustainability Award at the Speaker Reception for the 14th annual This Way to Sustainability Conference.

Sophomore softball pitcher Brooke Larsen notched three wins at the Tournament of Champions and was named the CCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Senior track and field athlete Tyler Arroyo earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) Field Athlete of the Week honors after an NCAA Championship-qualifying high jump of 7 feet, 1.5 inches.

Senior men’s golfer Josh McCollum captured the CCAA Men’s Golfer of the Week honor, after shooting a 10-under par to win the Harry Stanislaus Invitational.
