Worth Sharing: Speech and Debate Team Start Season Strong

The following is a listing of professional achievements by Chico State faculty, staff, and students. Submit your professional achievements to ucomm@csuchico.edu.

Awards and Activities

The Chico State Speech and Debate team competed at a recent event in San Francisco and performed well. Giovanni Fernandez placed first in the Open Impromptu and Extemporaneous Speaking categories, and placed second in Program of Oral Interpretation; Patrick Mulholland placed first in the Open After Dinner Speaking category; Aundrea Mendoza placed first in the Novice Impromptu Speaking category; and Kayla Ernst was received a finalist award in the Open Dramatic Interpretation category. All of these students qualified for the National Forensics Association (NFA) Tournament in April 2020.

Two weeks later, the Chico State Speech and Debate team competed at the Mills Invitational at Palomar College in San Diego. Fernandez placed second in the Open Impromptu, Open Extemporaneous, and Open Prose categories; Edgar Hernandez placed first in the Open Impromptu Speaking category; and Mendoza placed fourth in the Novice Extemporaneous Speaking category, while qualifying for NFA Nationals.

The next day, against competition from all across the Western United States at the Aztec Invitational at San Diego State, Fernandez placed fifth in the Open Extemporaneous category, fifth in the Open Program of Oral Interpretation category, and first in the Open Impromptu category. Fernandez has qualified for four events at NFA Nationals, and another event at American Forensic Association (AFA) Nationals.
